Jose Luis is the only harpist to play both the classic concert harp and the Latin lever harp; which requires him to pluck the strings with two different techniques; the first uses his fingertips and the second his nails. \nJose Luis first fell in love with the sound of the harp and began studying in his early teens with Maestro Jose Serrano in Puerto Rico. DESCRIPTION:What We See Matters! – Storytelling Through Photography \nApril 5th\, 2024; 4PM-6:30PM \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED\, OPEN TO AGES: 11-15 \nRegister here \nFacilitated by Christopher Lopez \nEmbrace your inner artist with this photography workshop at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum! Students will learn about photography and how to use the provided cameras. Afterward\, the group will explore Inwood and take photographs following a selected theme. One photograph will be selected from each student to be exhibited at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum! \nStudents will learn to understand photographic form and use related vocabulary to support their analyses of photographs\, as well as articulate the process of creating meaning through form\, content\, and context. Students will expand their visual literacy by learning to look\, and by decoding images reviewed in class and encoding these ideas into their own original photographs outside of class in the surrounding area. The students will be asked to see the Dyckman community as a principal subject. DESCRIPTION:“The Ancestor’s Future: An Afrofuturist’s Journey Through Time” \nExhibition Opening Reception \nApril 30th\, 6PM-8PM \nFREE \n“The Ancestor’s Future: An Afrofuturist’s Journey Through Time\,” Exhibition is a personally curated journey from the past of Black America to the future of the African diaspora with performance artist and public historian Cheyney McKnight. It will explore community bonds\, community healing\, and community adaptability. McKnight speculates on a distant future while looking to the past and present to inform us on how Black Americans may get to a future where Black bodies and communities reap the full benefits of their creativity\, ingenuity\, resources\, and labor. \nProgram funding is provided by the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation (UMEZ). Wula Drum will offer a drumming performance and lead a drumming workshop as part of DFM’s Pinkster Week programming. Pinkster is an African American holiday that originated in the Dutch colony of New Netherland (present-day New York) in the 17th century. Pinkster was celebrated 7 weeks after Pentecost\, or Pinksteren\, and was originally a Dutch holiday. Pinkster became one of the few days of the year when enslavers would allow the people they enslaved to gather in groups\, sell goods\, dance\, make music\, and celebrate\, and in 1790-1810\, Pinkster became primarily an African American holiday. \n  \nTaller de Percusión y Presentación de Wula Drum \n23 de mayo de 2024\, de 6:00 p.m. a 7:30 p.m. \nGRATIS\, por orden de llegada \n¡Marquen sus calendarios para el 23 de mayo! Visitors will experience an immersive dance performance\, and have a chance to dance themselves. The Grand Tour was the name of the popular trips of youngsters that visited the main capitals of Europe in the 18th Century. Attendees will experience a music and dance program that transports them to 18th Century England\, France and Spain. Our guides are dancers Julia Bengtsson and Patrick Pride from The New York Baroque Dance Company\, America’s leading Baroque dance ensemble\, and the musicians Paul Shipper\, Jason Priset and Dongmyung Ahn. \nAbout the performers \nJulia Bengtsson  \nSwedish-born Julia Bengtsson has choreographed over 20 ballets\, operas and films for venues including Carnegie Hall\, UN Headquarters and Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center. Her stage direction of Opera Lafayette’s production of Venus and Adonis was praised by The Washington Post as “a fine evening’s entertainment”. She has made presentations at Temple University\, NYU\, and University of Pittsburgh. She joined The New York Baroque Dance Company in 2018 and in 2021 she was the first dancer chosen for Early Music America’s Emerging Professional Leadership Council. She regularly performs with Pegasus\, Raritan Players\, The Sebastians\, and TENET Vocal Artists. She has played rebec in the critically acclaimed production of The Play of Daniel at the Cloisters. A dedicated educator\, Dongmyung has taught music history at Columbia University\, New York University\, Queens College\, Rutgers University\, and Vassar College. It also discusses the “push and pull” factors behind Rodriguez’s migration and his decision to settle in a land that would be later named New York City. \nDr. Ramona Hernández is Professor of Sociology at the City College of New York\, City University of New York (CUNY) and Director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. Dr. Hernández is also affiliated with the Doctoral faculties of the Department of Sociology and the Master of International Studies\, both at the CUNY Graduate Center. Under her leadership\, CUNY DSI\, which is home to a research unit\, Dominican Library\, and Dominican Archives\, has distinguished itself as a world-class institute of research known for its groundbreaking scholarship on the history of the Dominican people in the United States and elsewhere. Dr. Hernández is the author\, co-author and co-editor of numerous writings and research projects focusing on the Dominican people. Jose Luis is the only harpist to play both the classic concert harp and the Latin lever harp; which requires him to pluck the strings with two different techniques; the first uses his fingertips and the second his nails. \nJose Luis first fell in love with the sound of the harp and began studying in his early teens with Maestro Jose Serrano in Puerto Rico. He later visited Los Angeles to take private lessons with the world-renowned harpist and composer Alfredo Rolando Ortiz.

Join Afrofuturist\, Artist\, and Historical Interpreter Cheyney McKnight in her exhibit\, The Ancestor’s Future: An Afrofuturist’s Journey Through Time at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.  The exhibit is a personally curated journey from the past of Black America to the future of the African diaspora that uses clothing and set design to center the descendants in the conversation.  The public is invited to join Mcknight along with other descendants over a cup of tea in a conversation about the African experience in America’s past\, how it is impacting the present\, and hear speculations about the far future of the Diaspora through the lens of descendants.
