SUMMARY:New York Adventure Club Private Tour and Reception
DESCRIPTION:New York Adventure Club Private Tour of the Dyckman Farmhouse \nWine reception to follow \nSaturday\, June 15th at 4:30PM \nRegistration required\, register here \nIf you were to take a time machine back to 18th-century Manhattan\, you would come across lush forests\, rolling hills\, an abundance of wildlife\, and small Dutch family farms scattered throughout the countryside. While most of that rural beauty has vanished thanks to 300 years of industrialization\, one lone farmhouse has stood the test of time\, still in its original plot on bustling Broadway. It’s time to explore this important piece of New York history after the doors close to the public. \nJoin New York Adventure Club for an after-hours tour & wine reception at the Dyckman Farmhouse — built in 1784\, this Dutch Colonial style farmhouse is the last remaining one of its kind in Manhattan. \nOur private experience at this hidden gem in Manhattan will include: \n\nStories around the Dyckman family\, rural Northern Manhattan landscape\, and a lifestyle that disappeared during the transformation from farming community to urban neighborhood\nA private\, after-hours tour through the historic rooms and garden of the 238-year-old Dyckman farmhouse\nA wine & cheese reception in the backyard garden\, which includes a small reproduced smokehouse from 1916\, a well\, and a Military Hut that British troops would have lived in during the early days of the Revolutionary War\n\n  \n  \nTour privado del New York Adventure Club por la granja Dyckman \nA continuación se celebrará una recepción con vino.

SUMMARY:After Emancipation: Finding Black New Yorkers after 1827
DESCRIPTION:After Emancipation: Finding Black New Yorkers after 1827 \nBy Dr. Adam Arenson \nJune 20th at 7PM \nFREE on the Back Porch at the Dyckman Farmhouse \nThe enslavement of African and Native Americans ended less than two hundred years ago\, in 1827. And the 1850 census was the first to list every member of a household individually. Since these dates are relatively close together\, they help us see the patterns of Black settlement\, Black migration\, and Black resistance to the racism of U.S. history before\, during\, and after the Civil War. This presentation will discuss the ongoing research of Dr. Arenson\, which has included students as well as descendants of those enslaved in New York\, and sites from Seneca Village in Central Park to communities up the Hudson River and into Canada. \nDr. Adam Arenson has taught U.S. History\, including the history of slavery in New York\, at Manhattan College since 2014. He has earned history degrees from Harvard and Yale\, and has published two books and two edited volumes\, along with scholarly articles and history for the wider public in the New York Times and other publications. He is completing a book\, After the Underground Railroad\, with African Canadian public historian Irene Moore Davis.

SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: "After I Pick the Fruit: The Lives of Migrant Women"
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the museum’s parlor as we present the documentary film “After I Pick the Fruit: The Lives of Migrant Women\,” directed by Nancy Ghertner. Followed by a discussion that connects the experiences of migrant farmworkers to the history of the Dyckman farmhouse during its orchard years. The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum stands as a testament to the agricultural heritage and immigration history of New York City. As we explore the lives of migrant women depicted in the film\, we’ll also reflect on the historical context of farming and immigration in United States. \nOur objective with this event is to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by immigrant farmworkers and their vital role in sustaining this nation. Afterwards we invite you to take a short walk outside of the farmhouse and locate the historic cherry tree left in the property\, take a few minutes to reflect and consider those who have shaped our society. This event is free and open to the public\, light refreshments will be provided. The film will begin at 11:30am and the discussion will start at 1:00pm after the film.

\nOur private experience at this hidden gem in Manhattan will include: \n\nStories around the Dyckman family\, rural Northern Manhattan landscape\, and a lifestyle that disappeared during the transformation from farming community to urban neighborhood\nA private\, after-hours tour through the historic rooms and garden of the 238-year-old Dyckman farmhouse\nA wine & cheese reception in the backyard garden\, which includes a small reproduced smokehouse from 1916\, a well\, and a Military Hut that British troops would have lived in during the early days of the Revolutionary War\n\nClick here to see pictures from one of our last visits to the Dyckman Farmhouse. \nSee you there! \n*The farmhouse and outside garden can only be accessed via a flight of stairs \nTestimonials \n“The history shared by the guide and her enthusiasm. SUMMARY:“Bled\, Cupped\, Blister’d and Purged”—Healthcare in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries
DESCRIPTION:“Bled\, Cupped\, Blister’d and Purged”—Healthcare in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries \nBy Dr. Gretchen Sorin \nAugust 7th at 6:30PM \nVIRTUAL VIA ZOOM \nRegister here \nHealthcare in the time of the Dyckman Farmhouse\, the 18th and early 19th centuries\, was dramatically different from healthcare and wellness today\, although we can see vestiges of this time in some current practices. The people of the enlightenment made some moves toward cleanliness\, but\, the lack of indoor plumbing and body cleansing\, the difficulty of finding clean water\, and the lack of sewage systems contributed to a host of health problems\, as did a limited number of effective medicines. Inspired by an exhibition developed by the Cooperstown Graduate Program\, “Health and Hygiene at a 19th century Farmhouse\,” this talk will highlight medical practices in this period and the care available to both wealthy landowners and the enslaved people who shared their households.

SUMMARY:"I Was Their Midwife": Pregnancy\, Childbirth\, and Motherhood on Seventeenth-Century Slave Ships
DESCRIPTION:“I was their midwife”: Pregnancy\, Childbirth\, and Motherhood on Seventeenth-Century Slave Ships \nBy Dr. Andrea Mosterman \nAugust 28th at 12PM \nVIRTUAL; FREE \nRegister here \nShips are usually seen as masculine spaces\, and slave ships are no exception. But as the slave voyages database shows\, about a fourth of the captives transported on board seventeenth and eighteenth-century Dutch slavers were in fact women. In this presentation\, I explore the experiences of women on board these slavers\, paying special attention to pregnancy\, childbirth\, and motherhood in these spaces.

SUMMARY:Bearing Witness: An Update on the Journey Toward Collaboration\, Repair and Return at the Inwood Sacred Site and African Burial Ground
DESCRIPTION:Bearing Witness: An Update on the Journey Toward Collaboration\, Repair and Return at the Inwood Sacred Site and African Burial Ground \nBy Peggy King Jorde and Rachel Watkins \nThursday\, August 29th at 6PM on the back porch at DFM \nIn Inwood until the late 1800s\, the Dyckman and Nagel family cemeteries remained with grave markings\, enclosed by a fence\, and appeared to be a well kept rural cemetery. A few hundreds yards away were unmarked graves of enslaved Africans. During rapid development in the early 20th century\, the site was discovered in March of 1903\, and again\, no means of protection came for those buried in this hilly knoll\, and the bodies were exhumed\, examined\, and stolen. \nThe location of the Inwood Sacred Site lies between today’s 211th and 212th Streets\, between Broadway and 10th Avenue. Until recently\, this block was occupied by various Auto Shops and P.S. 98 – Shorac Kappock’s faculty parking lot. The local community of Inwood is fighting to raise awareness and gain recognition of this sacred site that was sadly desecrated a century ago. Hear from the team behind the Inwood Sacred Site Memorial at this session of Back Porch History at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.
