SUMMARY:New Research on Enslavement in Upper Manhattan: A DyckmanDISCOVERED Update
DESCRIPTION:New Research on Enslavement in Upper Manhattan: A DyckmanDISCOVERED Update \nFebruary 5th\, 2025 at 12PM \nVIRTUAL VIA ZOOM \nRegister Here \nSince 2015\, the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum has emphasized the importance of telling a complete history of our site\, including the farmhouse’s history as a site of enslavement. In 2023\, we hired a research consultant\, Ramin Ganeshram\, to dive deeper into this history. Ramin searched through archives to continue our research on enslavement\, with a primary focus on culinary history\, colonial kitchens\, and Lenape influences on cooking in the 18th century. In this talk\, attendees will hear about the discoveries made during this project. \nIn addition\, attendees will hear from the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum’s Executive Director\, Melissa Kiewiet\, about how the museum plans to use this research. Melissa will discuss the museum’s reinterpretation plans\, beginning with a new exhibition in our basement kitchen that uses Ramin’s new research. \nThis program is supported by the Ministry of Education\, Culture and Science of the Kingdom of the Netherlands\, through the DutchCulture USA FUTURE 400 program of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York. SUMMARY:Envisioning Seneca Village
DESCRIPTION:Envisioning Seneca Village \nFebruary 26th at 12PM \nVIRTUAL VIA ZOOM \nRegister here \nBy Gergely Baics\, Meredith Linn\, Leah Meisterlin\, and Myles Zhang \nSeneca Village was a community established by African American landowners in 1825 and destroyed by the City of New York in 1857 for the construction of Central Park. Research beginning in the 1990s has shed light on the once-forgotten village: a stable\, successful\, rural home to dozens of families. Much is still unknown\, however\, and no images or above-ground traces remain\, making imagining the village challenging. This talk presents Envisioning Seneca Village\, an interactive 3D model of what the village might have looked like in 1855. The project’s coauthors will discuss how they combined ongoing research in archaeology\, history\, historical geographic information systems (GIS)\, and architectural rendering to build the model; their plans for future improvements; and their aims for the project to both catalyze new research and keep the memory of Seneca Village alive in the present. \nThis program is supported by the Ministry of Education\, Culture and Science of the Kingdom of the Netherlands\, through the DutchCulture USA FUTURE 400 program of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.

SUMMARY:History in Focus 2025: "Tradition\, Family\, and Conflict among NYC's West African Communities" with Dr. Andrew Rasmussen
DESCRIPTION:Dyckman Farmhouse Museum presents \nHistory In Focus 2025:\nA Virtual Lecture Series on\nImmigrant History in Upper Manhattan!\n  \n“Tradition\, Family\, and Conflict among NYC’s West African\nCommunities” with Dr. Andrew Rasmussen\nMay 15th 2025\n12pm on Zoom\nFREE!\nREGISTER HERE!\nFor the first installment of Dyckman Farmhouse Museum’s History in Focus 2025\, we will be hearing from Dr. Andrew Rasmussen\, a Professor of Psychology and head of the Culture\, Migration\, and Community research group at Fordham University. \n\n\nDr. Rasmussen will present findings from three studies from two decades of research with various West African immigrant groups. \n\n\nFindings point to challenges often reported by new immigrants related to child-rearing and resolving spousal conflict. Parents’ concerns about children acting “American” are exacerbated by a fear of child protective services\, leaving parents feeling at a loss for how they can stay true to their cultures’ strict values concerning child rearing. Children\, who acculturate faster than their parents\, often appreciate close monitoring and even strict discipline by parents but also feel they are somewhat limited by it. Spousal conflict also appears to be related to more conservative cultural norms\, but is also related to the necessity of two-income households in the city. \nFindings from all three studies are integrated to build a model of social problem-solving in West African communities\, one that includes family members\, neighbors\, and community leaders\, and then also state actors (police and welfare officials). \n\n\nThis program is supported\, in part\, by\, the Honorable Carmen De La Rosa\, New York City Council\, District 10.

SUMMARY:History in Focus 2025: "Plentiful Country: The Great Potato Famine and the Making of Irish New York" By Dr. Tyler Anbinder
DESCRIPTION:Dyckman Farmhouse Museum presents \nHistory In Focus 2025:\nA Virtual Lecture Series on\nImmigrant History in Upper Manhattan!\n  \n“Plentiful Country: The Great Potato Famine and the Making of Irish\nNew York” By Dr. Tyler Anbinder\nMay 29th 2025\n12pm on Zoom\nFREE!\nREGISTER HERE!\nThe second session of Dyckman Farmhouse Museum’s History in Focus 2025 will be led by Dr. Tyler Anbinder\, a Professor of History at George Washington University with a specialization in nineteenth-century America and the history of immigration and ethnicity in American life. \nDr. Anbinder will discuss his new book\, “Plentiful Country: The Great Potato Famine and the Making of Irish New York\,” and how it upends what we thought we knew about the Famine Irish in New York and beyond. \nIn 1845\, a fungus began to destroy Ireland’s potato crop\, triggering a famine that would kill one million Irish men\, women\, and children—and drive over one million more to flee to America. The United States was utterly transformed by this stupendous migration\, nowhere more than in New York. By 1855\, one out of every three adults living in Manhattan was a refugee who had escaped the hunger in Ireland. These so-called “Famine Irish” were consigned at first to the lowest-paying jobs and subjected to discrimination and ridicule by their new countrymen. Even today\, the popular perception of these immigrants is one of destitution and despair. But it turns out that the Famine immigrants did far better\, far more quickly\, than we have previously realized. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by\, the Honorable Carmen De La Rosa\, New York City Council\, District 10.

SUMMARY:History in Focus 2025: "Diversity and it’s Limits: Attitudes Towards Immigration in New York" with Dr. Philip Kasinitz
DESCRIPTION:  \nDyckman Farmhouse Museum presents\nHistory In Focus 2025:\nA Virtual Lecture Series on\nImmigrant History in Upper Manhattan\n“Diversity and it’s Limits: Attitudes Towards Immigration in New York”\nwith Dr. Philip Kasinitz\nJune 18th\, 2025\n12pm on Zoom\nFREE!\nREGISTER HERE!\nNew York’s history has long been the history of migrants and newcomers. Since the days of Dutch New Amsterdam\, waves of migrants—some voluntary\, some not—have continually remade the city. Historically\, immigrants have accounted for almost all of the City’s population growth as well as its emergence as a center of economic activity and cultural innovation. \nDespite its long history of ethnic and racial conflict\, New Yorkers have generally been more favorably disposed towards immigration—if not necessarily towards all groups of immigrants– than most Americans. However\, last year’s influx of refugees\, many of whom were bused to New York\, has presented the city with new challenges. The mayor described this influx as “unprecedented” and feared that it could “destroy the city”. More recently the policies of the Trump administration have framed migration as a “crisis” and local and federal policies have increasingly come into conflict. \nFor the FINAL presentation of History in Focus 2025\, Dr. Philip Kasinitz will explore some of the history of how New York has received immigrants and discuss what is and is not new about the present situation. Dr. Kasinitz will also present the surprising findings of a new survey on attitudes towards migrants among today’s New Yorkers. \nPhilip Kasinitz is Presidential Professor of Sociology and director of the Advanced Research Collaborative at the City University of New York Graduate Center\, where he founded the Master’s program in International Migration Studies. His co-authored book Inheriting the City: The Children of Immigrants Come of Age received the American Sociological Association Distinguished Book Award and the Eastern Sociological Society’s Mira Komarovsky Book award. Other recent works include Growing Up Muslim in Europe and the United Sates and Global Cities\, Local Streets. Former President of the Eastern Sociological Society\, he serves on The Russell Sage Foundation’s committee on Race\, Ethnicity and Immigration and the Historical Advisory Committee of the Ellis Island Museum. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by\, the Honorable Carmen De La Rosa\, New York City Council\, District 10.

SUMMARY:Back Porch History 2025: "The Amazing Story of the Dyckman Farmhouse" with Don Rice
DESCRIPTION:What’s the most historic thing in Inwood? For many\, the DYCKMAN FARMHOUSE would be at the top of the list. It’s not only a national landmark\, it’s one of the oldest structures in Manhattan. The name Dyckman appears all over the neighborhood – on streets\, schools\, shops\, subway stations\, ballfields\, basketball tournaments. What is its story? When was it built\, who lived there\, and why is it still around? \nOn June 26th at 6pm\, DFMA trustee Don Rice will present The Amazing Story of the Dyckman Farmhouse\, a recently researched tour-de-force that pulls together everything we know about this fascinating and historic structure. Using  primary documents and rarely-seen images and maps we’ll trace the history of Inwood’s oldest home\, and even make a few guesses about its future. \n  \nDate: Wednesday\, July 16th 2025 \nTime: 6pm-7pm \nPlace: Dyckman Farmhouse Museum (on the corner of 204th and Broadway) \nCost: FREE

SUMMARY:Our LAST Back Porch History of 2025: “Kingsbridge at the Dawn of the Revolution” with Nick Dembowski
DESCRIPTION:1775 was 250 years ago. At that time the people of Kingsbridge did not know that the most dramatic and violent 8 years in the history of the area were about to begin. The Revolutionary War would transform the neighborhood from a lush and fertile farming community into a muddy battle-scarred military camp with forts on every hilltop. \nFor the community that was here\, 1775 was the year that everything changed. The men of the area formed a militia for defense and the Continental Congress ordered the area fortified. But why here? Why did George Washington consider it a “pass of the utmost importance?” And how did local people feel about the ideas and events that were reshaping America and their lives? \nOn August 27th at 6:00 PM\, join us for Dyckman Farmhouse Museum’s LAST Back Porch History lecture of the season featuring historian Nick Dembowski\, who will take you on a virtual tour of Kingsbridge and northern Manhattan in the years before the war\, leading up to the Declaration of Independence. \nNick Dembowski is a Bronx local historian and Executive Director of the Kingsbridge Historical Society. He was the lead curator of the Kingsbridge Remembers 1775-1783 exhibit at the Kingsbridge Historical Society. He is also the Site Historian of the Van Cortlandt House Museum. \nDate: Wednesday\, August 27th \nTime: 6-7pm \nCost: FREE! \nVirtual option? YES! Register HERE! \nLocation: Livestream via Zoom and in person at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum (on the corner of 204th and Broadway)
