DESCRIPTION:Dyckman Discussions: The Atlantic Slave Trade\nApril 20\, 2023 at 6PM\nLocation: PS 098\n\nDyckman Discussions is a two year discussion series focusing on exploring topics in New York history\, such as forced removal of indigenous people\, Dutch colonization\, enslaved labor\, and immigration. “The Atlantic Slave Trade\,” is the third panel in a series of 5 taking place in 2023.\nMore about the panel: Although most New Yorkers do not recognize the city as a historic slave marketplace\, the seaport did act as the western endpoint of the Middle Passage for tens of thousands of people brought to the New World against their will. SUMMARY:Dyckman Discussions: Indigenous Communities of Greater New York
DESCRIPTION:Dyckman Discussions: Indigenous Communities of Greater New York\nApril 1\, 2023 at 2PM\nLocation: Holy Trinity Church Inwood \nDyckman Discussions is a two year discussion series focusing on exploring topics in New York history\, such as forced removal of indigenous people\, Dutch colonization\, enslaved labor\, and immigration. “Indigenous Communities of Upper Manhattan\,” is the second panel in a series of 5 taking place in 2023. \nMore about the panel: The New York metropolitan area has yet to reckon with its history of marginalizing indigenous people – specifically the Delaware and Algonquin-speaking communities of the Northeast and Long Island. Chaired by Chritsian Aynne Crouch (Bard College)\, this panel casts a light on the practices\, customs\, and traditions of indigenous people. This will include a discussion of diaspora\, as many of these communities were forced north\, east\, or west\, as a result of the encroachment from European colonists and American migrants. \nNo registration is required to attend in person. To attend virtually\, please register here.

SUMMARY:Kathleen Holloway Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wine reception to celebrate the opening of a new exhibition from Kathleen Holloway! \nThe genesis for this recent body of work comes from all of the changes we\, as a society both locally and globally\, have gone through in the past few years. The pandemic forced many of us to work from home\, wear masks to cover our faces\, and to keep socially distant from family\, friends\, and neighbors. This mutual isolation has changed our society and ourselves in profound ways. Yet as we start going “back to normal”\, what we once knew of our surrounding world is now altered. The familiar has become unfamiliar. \nTo demonstrate this idea visually\, Kathleen photographs the things we all collectively recognize\, such as trees\, leaves\, clouds\, and flowers\, then manipulates a single frame in a kaleidoscopic spin to reveal new forms and patterns that lay hidden beneath the surface. Once printed and mounted to a substrate\, she uses encaustic wax to coat the pieces in various thicknesses\, adding texture and depth to transform the images. This gives the audience a deeper interaction with the pieces and challenges the concept of what we designate “a photograph”. She is also exploring various other ways of presenting her work by printing on cotton rag papers and fabrics. \nAfter graduating from the photography program at The Art Institute in Seattle\, Kathleen Holloway moved back East\, where she grew up\, to pursue a career as a photo editor in publishing and the entertainment industry. After 20 years of working with photographers\, Kathleen is finally following her dream of showing her own work. She continues to strive to present photographs that visually engage the audience to see the beauty of transformation. \nTo see more of her work\, please follow Kathleen on Instagram at kathleen_holloway_photos.

SUMMARY:Talking About Race Matters - Join the Conversation with Karen Washington
DESCRIPTION:September 21\, 2022 @ 6:30 PM – Karen Washington \nFood Justice is More than Growing Food and Feeding People \nPeople in poor urban and rural communities are told that if they want food security\, all they have to do is grow their own vegetables\, give up soda and exercise\, as if\, by magic\, eating vegetables and drinking water are going to solve the problems in the food system\, without looking at the institutional. environmental and structural determinants that reinforce racism in today’s society. How has the COVID-19 changed the way people now think?
