Archaeological Walking Tour of Inwood Hill Park with Bill Parry

Meet at the main flagpole in Inwood Hill Park at 1 PM (this is the flagpole at Isham St., near the rest rooms, not the flagpole next to the tennis courts). Will conclude about 3 PM at the Dyckman Farmhouse (Broadway at 204th Street). Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes (there will be a bit of walking over dirt and rocks).

This archaeological tour of Inwood Hill Park and vicinity (at the northern tip of Manhattan Island) will visit the last surviving remnants of prehistoric Native American sites in Manhattan. We will get an impression of the ancient environment of Manhattan by seeing forest, springs, and salt marsh. We will next visit a shell midden site, rockshelters, and the former location of a large native village and burial site. We also will see sites of the Revolutionary War, including the site of a hut camp occupied by British soldiers (and the former Dyckman family orchard). We will conclude at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum, where we will see a reconstruction of one of the military huts.

Enjoy free admission to the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum at the end of the tour. Masks are required indoors.

RECORRIDO ARQUEOLÓGICO A PIE POR EL PARQUE INWOOD HILL

Nos reuniremos en el asta de la bandera principal en Inwood Hill Park a la 1:00 pm. (Este es el asta de la bandera en Isham St., cerca de los baños, no el asta de la bandera al lado de las canchas de tenis). Concluirá alrededor de las 3:00 pm en el Museo Dyckman Farmhouse (en la esquina de Broadway y la calle 204). Use zapatos resistentes y cómodos (habrá que caminar un poco sobre tierra y rocas).

En este recorrido arqueológico por Inwood Hill Park y sus alrededores (en el norte de la isla de Manhattan) visitaremos los últimos restos de sitios prehistóricos y donde vivían nativos americanos en Manhattan. Obtendremos una impresión del entorno más primitivo de Manhattan al visitar bosques, manantiales y lagunas. Visitaremos un basurero de conchas, refugios rocosos y la ubicación de donde vivieron los indígenas Lenape y donde se ubicó uno de los lugares de entierro. También visitaremos sitios de la Guerra de la Revolución, incluido un campamento de cabañas ocupadas por soldados británicos (y el antiguo huerto de la familia Dyckman). Concluimos el paseo en el Museo Dyckman Farmhouse, donde visitamos una cabaña militar original.
