I Was Here: Reshaping the American Commemorative Landscape

Created by photographing contemporary African Americans as archetypal Ancestor Spirits, the Portraits invoke the Human Family – Man, Woman, Child, Mother, Father, Sister, Brother. These emblematic Ancestor Spirits Portraits ask us to examine who we are to each other, who we are as a nation and how we can work to heal the wound that enslavement created in our citizenship. The project is a synthesis of history, image, geography, and soundscape creating an opportunity for citizens of all ages to come face to face and heart to heart with a spiritual history rarely, if ever, encountered on the streets of America.

Creado al fotografiar a los afroamericanos contemporáneos como espíritus ancestrales arquetípicos, los Retratos invocan a la Familia Humana: Hombre, Mujer, Niño, Madre, Padre, Hermana, Hermano. Estos emblemáticos retratos de los espíritus ancestrales nos piden que examinemos quiénes somos el uno para el otro, quiénes somos como nación y cómo podemos trabajar para curar la herida que la esclavitud creó en nuestra ciudadanía. El proyecto es una síntesis de historia, imagen, geografía y paisaje sonoro que crea una oportunidad para que los ciudadanos de todas las edades se encuentren cara a cara y de corazón a corazón con una historia espiritual que rara vez, o nunca, se encuentra en las calles de Estados Unidos.
